Camara Oscura

A photographic project with children

"Camara Oscura" is deeply interested in places where social and political changes are affecting the reality. Through photography and creativity we contribute and challenge children to legitimize their experiences and unique perception.

Using photography as a platform for a cultural exchange between London based artists and the children of indigenous communities of South America, the project combines the teaching of an old photographic and printing technique, with a new way (for us) of seeing and understanding the environment and Mother Nature.

The project was conceived as a photography workshop based on the idea of exploring light and giving the children technical knowledge, a printed memory of their experience and new possibilities to develop their creativity.

Using simple yet meaningful and symbolic subject matter chosen by the children – seeds, flowers and fruits – a representation of their everyday lives, the project invites the viewer to imagine a world beyond the resulting images. The resulting images make visible to the viewer the oral traditions and ancient beliefs coming from the heart of the south american continent.
